Reflexology is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas on the hands and feet which correspond to all body parts. The physical act of applying pressure using thumb, finger and hand techniques, primarily to the feet, causes a physiological change in the body, resulting in the reduction of stress in the corresponding organ or system. As stress and tension subsides in the corresponding areas blood flow increases bringing in nutrients and oxygen, while flushing toxins away. This action aids the body by triggering its own healing process so it can come back to a balanced state.
It is particularly appropriate to reduce stress, influence the internal systems, and for those times where direct manipulation of a part of the body is contraindicated. Reflexology also aids in structural problems of the foot such as plantar fascitis, heel spurs, metatarsalgia, and Achilles tendonitis.
Reflexology is more than a foot rub. Typically the client and therapist will have a conversation about the expectations for the session to find out if the client is there primarily for relaxation, or if there is a more complicated issue to work with. The client remains fully clothed and lies with their feet elevated. The therapist may choose to apply a lotion at the beginning to soften the feet. Both feet are worked on with alternating relaxation movements and a deeper inching technique. Generally all reflexive areas are worked, however certain reflexes or areas of the foot might be focused on. The client often becomes very relaxed and can begin to doze lightly. Sometimes the foot can be tender due to a number of reasons. If the client ever has any questions they should always feel free to ask the therapist. Tenderness is not always due to congestion in the corresponding organ that is being worked. Often times it is a structural issue in the tissues of the foot. Pressure can range from light to deep. The session generally lasts 1 hour. At times it is combined with other massage therapies, in that case it can last for shorter amounts of time.
After the session the client is very relaxed. The body will continue to release tensions and toxins for approximately the same amount of time as other therapies. Here too it is very important that the client drink more fluids to aid the body in its flushing away toxins. This therapy is often used in a health and wellness program for relaxation. The client’s body and its ability to integrate and maintain the work determine any deeper therapy’s effects. Often more than one session is necessary for more serious conditions. Talk to your therapist about the frequency they suggest for optimum benefits.
