Deep Tissue Massage

This is generally what people think of when they ask for a deep massage. It is a general category that includes a number of approaches to freeing the body’s system of myofascial connective tissue in and around muscles through deep manipulation. The focus is to loosen surface muscles in order to begin loosening deeper muscles. This loosening must occur or the deeper tissues and fascia cannot be reached. It helps with chronic muscular pain and injury rehabilitation, and reduced inflammation-related pain caused by arthritis and tendonitis.

A typical session lasts 1 hour. It is generally integrated with other techniques and is somewhere between a Swedish massage and a Sports massage with the style of techniques used and what the treatment session is like. During this technique it is very important to be checking in with the client to make sure that the therapist is not exceeding the clients comfort level. Soreness is a typical by-product from therapy work and the lasting affects may vary. Loosening of the targeted tissues may begin to occur immediately. The loosening will continue to occur over the next couple of hours so the client should feel the tension and pain subsiding. For contraindications see Swedish massage.

The client’s body and its ability to integrate the work will determine the number of treatments necessary. It will also be determined on where the chronic tension is coming from. If the source is emotional or a lifestyle habit then these root causes will perpetuate the problem and permanent, lasting relief may not occur until they are eliminated.
